2017 - The Event Flipper Recap
I have to say 2017 was quite a year! I fully engaged myself in my business and embraced my year of no fear. When you open yourself to opportunities and possibilities, no matter where they may come from, it’s amazing what happens. 2017 was an awesome year of learning, growth and a lot of great opportunities.
Beware of Mercury Retrograde
Everyone has their quirks and ways of conducting business and entering business. For those who don’t believe in the effects of planetary movements, just bear with me. This wonderful phenomenon called Mercury Retrograde occurs when the planet Mercury gets too close to Earth and creates a dust wind. This dust wind affects everything from communication to travel plans – virtually any big decisions. True believers, which I am one of them, proceed with caution during this time period and usually don’t seal any deals (contracts), limit communication and activity – that may backfire later on. I did two major things during retrograde. The first was a vendor show, which was a big bust. It was so windy that my items refused to stay on the table. The second, I joined a referral group. It sounded promising at the time, but I didn’t benefit from being a member. I’ve learned to proceed with caution during this time period, because poor decisions cost time and money. To avoid surprises, my 2018 calendar is already updated with mercury retrograde dates. In the business world, being proactive is a must.
It Rained Events…Well, Sorta
In the beginning of the year, I set my bar of success really low. I was happy to get one event on the books. I ended up doing nine events, including a DJ gig for a birthday party. I never dreamed I would have gotten this awesome opportunity! Now, none of these gigs fell on my lap. You want to talk about hustling. I networked, sent out proposals and took every opportunity to promote my business and services. It’s what you have to do to be successful. It can rain opportunities. You just have to seek them.
Want to go far? Go together
I really embraced the African Proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. This proverb really hit me to the core. I love operating alone, because I can get things done quickly and efficiently. The old cog of working for corporate America where everything was a tribunal decision-making process was gone. Worthless meetings. Gone. I made quick decisions and it’s awesome. However, the event planning world isn’t a one-person show. There’s clients, vendors, guests, you name it. People started seeking me out to partner with them and I realized, that’s an awesome thing. Working with other people in the field furthers everyone’s business. Operating fast is great, but for building a sustainable business and strong relationships, you must go together. Find that partnership that helps further both of your businesses and strengthens your offerings.
What’s in Store for 2018?
Abundance. More. More events, more collaborations and partnerships, more workshops. More of The Event Flipper. I’m ready and excited for bigger and better things that involve producing events around the fabulous Alamo City and beyond. Why just settle for home? As technology is literally taking over every aspect of our lives, it’s that time to put a priority on face-to-face, personal interactions. That’s the only way we’re going to build true relationships and awaken our authentic selves. Are you ready?
